The following sections are brief summaries of certain circumstances where chiropractic care is an appropriate choice for health care.
YOU ARE IN PAIN
Pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. If you treat
it with drugs to cover up the pain you are not treating the cause of the
problem. When there is an interruption in the proper nerve flow it can
lead to pain and if ignored eventually lead to disability and a decrease
in your overall quality of life.
IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT OR INJURED ON THE JOB
An auto or work related accident, even when minor, can cause trauma
resulting in spinal misalignments which can cause mild to severe pain
and discomfort. It can also affect your structure and irritate your
bone, nerve, and muscles tissues surrounding the area. Immediate
chiropractic care can help to eliminate this pain and discomfort while
returning you to normal health as much sooner.
PREGNANCY
Many
women who become pregnant have a lot of questions about what is good for
them as well as their unborn baby. What about chiropractic care? Is it
safe? Absolutely. Is it hard to receive chiropractic care while I am
pregnant? Not at all. In fact, the adjusting table has special
modifications to adapt to the pregnant figure and make your adjustments
easy and worry free. Can I receive chiropractic treatments throughout my
entire pregnancy? Yes! In fact it is important for pregnant women to
receive this care throughout their pregnancy. It ensures that your spine
is as healthy and strong as it can possibly be to endure the stresses
that pregnancy places on you and your spine. It also helps the ensure
that all of your body’s systems are receiving the best nerve supply from
the spinal cord keeping both mother and baby safe and healthy
throughout the pregnancy. Chiropractic care should be at the top of
every pregnant woman’s list.
INFANTS
The day you
found out you were pregnant immediately you thought of everything you
could do to ensure that your baby would be healthy. Then one day your
baby is born and even now you are making choices to help your baby grow
and develop into a healthy toddler. However, with all the infant safe
toys and articles on how to have a healthy baby you may have overlooked
one very important aspect of your infant’s health. Have you had your
babies nervous system and spinal health checked?
A condition
known as Traumatic Birth Syndrome is becoming more commonly recognized
and studied. In one study a group of over 1200 infants were examined
only 5 days after being born. 95% of these infants were found to have
spinal abnormalities ranging from mild to severe subluxations resulting
in a range of symptoms including sleeplessness, hyperactivity, and
vomiting. Upon receiving a spinal adjustment the author notes that many
of the infants stopped crying, became quieter, showed signs of muscle
relaxation and sleepiness. This study along with many others have also
concluded that an untreated spine can lead to impairment of motor skills
and the central nervous system resulting in a lower resistance to many
infections and viruses especially those affecting the ears, nose, and
throat.
There are several times throughout your babies first
year when spinal examination is most important - the first being after
the birthing process. The process by which babies are born today can be
traumatic to your infant’s spine and nervous system.
The
second is when your baby starts to hold his or her head up. The muscles
in your infant’s neck have up to this point been under-developed and
unable to support the weight of his or her head. The lack of strength in
these muscles makes your infant very susceptible to spinal injury. This
damage can occur even from seemingly harmless play with your infant
such as tossing him or her into the air and catching him/her.
Other
times these checkups are important are at significant stages of
development when falling over and injury are likely such as learning to
sit-up, crawl, stand, and finally to walk.
When your baby is born
you get everything checked, right? The eyes, ears, heart, and overall
health, but how about his/her spine and nervous system? Have you had
those checked yet?
CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS
Should my child see a chiropractor? The answer is yes. You remember
when your child started to walk and all the falls, bumps, and bruises
that came with it. Then school started with all the sports activities
and heavy backpacks. All of these things, including poor posture and the
regular rigors of growing up, have contributed to a lot of stresses on
your child’s spine. Taking your child for a spinal checkup should be
right on your list along with all the other checkups for their teeth,
eyes, ears, and so on. The spine is our lifeline because it contains our
spinal cord which holds all the billions of nerve fibers that supply
messages from our brain to every part of our body. A healthy spine helps
ensure a healthy child. Chiropractic care has been sited in the
prevention of many childhood ailments including, colic, asthma, ear
infection, and attention deficit disorders. Not to mention back pain,
headaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Your teenagers’ body is
growing at a rapid rate. This is often the time that scoliosis
(curvature of the spine) develops. It is a very important time in your
child’s life for their spine to be checked. Additionally, if your child
is an athlete it is very important to have them checked by a
chiropractor. The rigors of sports can take a toll on the spine. Most
professional and Olympic (and many collegiate) athletes see a
chiropractor regularly to help them stay at peak performance levels.
SENIORS
There are
many physical problems that are associated with aging. As the body ages
wear and tear leads to arthritis which most people treat with drugs.
Chiropractic care, while not a cure, can be very effective in helping
with the pain and disability associated with spinal and extremity
arthritis and improve the quality of your life.
Do infants need Chiropractic care?
Absolutely! The day you found out you were pregnant immediately you
thought of everything you could do to ensure that your baby would be
healthy. You ate right. You avoided alcohol, smoking, and drugs or
medications that might harm your unborn infant. You took a childbirth
class and learned everything you could. Then one day your baby is born
and even now you are making choices to help your baby grow and develop
into a healthy toddler. However, with all the infant safe toys and
articles on how to have a healthy baby you may have overlooked one very
important aspect of your infant’s health. Have you had your babies

“With the birth
process becoming more and more an intervening procedure [a] chiropractic
checkup becomes even more important to a child’s future,” says Larry
Webster, DC, of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. A
